Inside the Walled City of Harar

Harar, often called the "City of Saints," is one of Ethiopia's most culturally distinct and historically significant destinations. Located in the eastern highlands, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is widely considered the fourth holiest city in Islam.

The Walled City (Harar Jugol): The heart of the city is the old town, "Jugol," which is surrounded by massive stone walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries. The wall originally had five gates, representing the five pillars of Islam, though a sixth gate was added in the 20th century.

Walking through Harar feels like stepping back in time. The city is a maze of narrow, winding alleyways lined with colorful houses. Unlike the larger, more modern Addis Ababa, Harar has maintained a "living museum" feel where centuries-old traditions remain active.
