Cockfighting
Kediri, East Java, Indonesia
Cockfighting is officially banned in Indonesia, but there are some rather loosely-defined exemptions for ‘cultural and traditional’ events.
Historically, the 'sabung' (cock) has served as a metaphor for the Indonesian warrior—a symbol of virility and courage. The state ban has probably less to do with animal welfare, though that is officially part of the rationale, and more to do with attempts to stamp out gambling.
